PDO Naoussa

The Boutari Winery, a historic Greek Winery, is situated in Naoussa, one of the most beautiful regions of Macedonia, on the eastern foothills of Mount Vermio. This winery constitutes an important landmark in the evolution of wine, in one of its most important homelands, Macedonia. Its vineyards are located on the sunny south-east slopes of Mount Vermio, protected by the cold northern winds. The abundant rainfall and the relatively cool climate play a beneficial role in the development and fruit-bearing of the vines. The soils are marl (clay loam), calcium-rich, ideal for producing wines with a rich body.

Tasting Note

After 130 years & 5 generations in winemaking, Boutari Winery launched “1879” Boutari Legacy, a super premium single vineyard Xinomavro from Trilofos Naoussa. The wine was named 1879 in honour of the year that the company was established in Naoussa by John Boutari, grand father of the current C.E.O., Constantine Boutari.

The wine has a deep red colour. Its aromas show intense complexity with primary aromas of red berries, dried fig, tomato juice. Secondary aromas from intense ageing consist of vanilla, plum, roasted nuts and a taint of cigar box. 1879 is great full bodied with pleasant acidity. The very soft tannins provide a soft mouthfeel, rich in density with a long, warm finish with an aftertaste of cocoa and red fruit.

Food Pairing.

The wine pairs greatly with red meat, game, pasta with creamy sauce and cheese platters.
